“Vigorous writing is concise. A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.
This requires not that the writer make all sentences short or avoid all detail and treat subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.”

E.B. White は大学で William Strunk Jr. の Writing の授業をとっていた。Professor Strunk は授業の中で “Omit needless words!” とまくし立てるような変わった人だったが、英語の Writing に関して一貫したスタイルを持っていた。その授業では Professor Strunk .が “the little book” と呼ばれていた自作のテキストを使っていた。この本は E.B.White がその “the little book” を改定したが100ページほどの依然littleな本である。英語のライティングのクラシック（らしい）。

決して英語そのものが簡潔で一意なわけではなく、英語で一般的に書かれている”スタイル”が簡潔で一意なことが分かった。
